National Diabetes Barometer
The National Diabetes Barometer is a three-part initiative designed to
evaluate the current state of diabetes in the United States in three
critical areas: societal, economic and clinical.
NCDP is working with its member association partners and independent
researchers to evaluate the impact of diabetes on our society and
measure our nation's response to the disease. The results of the
three barometers will show a snapshot of the current status of
diabetes in the United States, and serve as a benchmark for NCDP and
the larger diabetes community to measure future progress.

Societal Barometer
The Societal Barometer is based on a national public opinion poll
conducted by The Gallup Organization for NCDP. The poll measures public
perceptions and attitudes about diabetes in the United States.

Economic Barometer
The Economic Barometer explores how the cost burden of diabetes is distributed in the
U.S. across health care providers, public and private insurers and individuals. The
research, conducted by the Lewin Group, includes the following analyses of cost to the
nation for:
- Cost of Type 1 and 2 diabetes
- Gestational diabetes
- Undiagnosed diabetes
- Pre-diabetes
The research includes policy implications and recommendations and has been submitted
to peer-reviewed journals. Findings were released at a joint NCDP-Forbes Magazine
CEO Conference in New York on November 18, 2008, with additional cascade activities
to follow. Click here to view or download the research abstracts.

Clinical Barometer
The Clinical Barometer assesses how the quality of diabetes care is
measured in the U.S., identifies any existing gaps in these efforts and
recommends improvements. Results from the Clinical Barometer,
conducted by Jefferson Medical College, will be released in early
2009.
NCDP will release the findings to all three Barometers in 2008, and compile
them together in the future as a comprehensive National Diabetes Barometer.
